    Barren Lands – May 16 – Day 58

"In the morning, when it was whited-out, I saw a white wolf. It was running on the other side of the river. All of a sudden, I looked up and there it was... I usually talk to an animal like that, but it didn't really look much at me. It just kept going." – Will Steger, May 16, 2018. NWT. Day 58.

    Barren Lands – May 15 – Day 57

"I have to be back in the Cities on June 7 for an imporant fundraiser for the Steger Wilderness Center to fund our programs this summer. So that's a real deadline, but at the rate I'm going, I'd be a little late coming in through Baker Lake... So my goal is to get to the divide between the Thelon and Back Rivers, cache my canoe there, then next spring I'll come back to that area and go north to the Arctic Ocean. And then I'll cross the sound there to Cambridge Bay." - Will Steger, May 15, [...]

    Barren Lands – May 14 – Day 56

“I had a dangerous encounter with a Barren Lands grizzly bear… It was the biggest grizzly I’ve ever seen… The first situation is always to keep a cool head… When it turned and headed toward me, I knew it was time to get ready to take some action.” - Will Steger, May 15, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 56.

    Barren Lands – May 13 – Day 55

“In the whiteout, I made out just a glimpse of black… There was a slice of open water, really deep fast moving current right next to the shoreline…. That was a really dangerous situation. It would have been very easy to ski into that, and it was surrounded by ice that would have collapsed and the whole thing would have just floated under the ice.” - Will Steger, May 13, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 55.

    Barren Lands – May 12 – Day 54

“I was waiting and waiting… listening to the animals, and sure enough, the geese started making lots of fuss. Right after the geese was the sound of the engine. Last resupply, it was the ravens. Animals around will let you know if there’s a plane coming in.” - Will Steger, May 12, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 54.

    Barren Lands – May 11 – Day 53

“My resupply is only like 80 pounds – a gallon of gas and some food… This is really a simple plane. You’re not dealing with a Twin Otter, a huge plane worth a couple million dollars. A plane is a plane – you don’t want to crash it either way.” - Will Steger, May 11, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 53.

    Barren Lands – May 10 – Day 52

"On a sandbar not far from here, I scared up about 500 geese. It surprised me.  All of a sudden, they were just all over the place. It's nice seeing such a large number of geese around. It's a sure sign of spring." - Will Steger, May 10, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 52.

    Barren Lands – May 09 – Day 51

"It was a dreary day all the way through - kind of a depressing day. But it's okay, ya know? Usual thing. You just get what you get.. And I'm in it, and I'm experiencing it, so that's a part of the game." - Will Steger, May 09, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 51.

    Barren Lands – May 08 – Day 50

"Tomorrow the tempo changes quite a bit. There are some very serious rapids up ahead. .. I don't think anyone has ever done these rapids... I'm looking forward to a change of adventure." - Will Steger, May 08, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 50.

    Barren Lands – May 07 – Day 49

"I had faith that the tent would hold... At about midnight I did pack up my stuff. In case the tent does blow apart, I can still survive with a sleeping bag... It was a bitter sweet day, but mostly sweet - now that it's over especially." - Will Steger, May 07, 2018. Thelon River, NWT. Day 49.
