“I’ve traveled these areas of the north for about 55 years now. In some of the villages, I know three-generation families. They are an important part of why I travel here in Canada.” – Will Steger, March 30, 2018

Hear the tale of Will’s first 10 days in the Barren Lands as he tells it from the shelter of a trapper’s cabin north of Black Lake.

“There are a couple traditional routes with major portages that lead through the forest into the barrens. These portages have been used for millennia, probably thousands of years… giving access to the rivers needed for travel.” – Will Steger, March 29, 2018.

Will rests another day in a friend’s trapper’s cabin north of Black Lake and remembers the last time he traveled through the area in 2004, during his Arctic Transect expedition.

“Cutting firewood here is very difficult. Near any of these trappers’ cabins, all the firewood in the whole vicinity has already been cut off, so its hard to find anything dry… Took me about 5 hours today to get a couple piles of wood enough for a nice fire in the morning.” – Will Steger, March 28, 2018

Will continues to ride out the storm alone in a friend’s cabin north of Black Lake.

“Slept in the open by a fire, about 35°C below that night. Clear, moon, dead quiet, deep snow, northern lights, in the trees, no wind… and just a fantastic cold.” – Will Steger, March 27, 2018.

After two days in the wilderness without being able to transmit audio dispatches, Will checks in with an update on his progress.
